In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology commonly used to help individuals and couples struggling with infertility conceive a child. At SHIFAA PAN African Hospitals, our Obstetric Care department offers comprehensive IVF services, providing personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs and circumstances.
Procedure:
The IVF process involves several steps:
- -Ovarian Stimulation: Patients receive hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
- -Monitoring: The patient’s response to medication is closely monitored through blood tests and ultrasound imaging.
- -Egg Retrieval: When the eggs reach optimal maturity, they are retrieved from the ovaries using a minimally invasive procedure called transvaginal ultrasound aspiration.
- -Fertilization: The retrieved eggs are then fertilized with sperm in a laboratory setting. This can be done through conventional insemination, where sperm and eggs are combined in a dish, or through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is directly injected into each egg.
- -Embryo Culture: Fertilized eggs, now embryos, are cultured in the laboratory for several days to allow for development.
- -Embryo Transfer: One or more embryos are selected for transfer into the woman’s uterus. This is typically done 3 to 5 days after egg retrieval.
- -Luteal Phase Support: Patients receive medications to support the uterine lining and improve the chances of embryo implantation.
Preparation:
Before starting IVF treatment, patients undergo a thorough evaluation, including a medical history review, physical examination, and fertility testing. They may also receive counseling to discuss the emotional, financial, and ethical aspects of IVF treatment.
Post-Treatment Care:
Following embryo transfer, patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities. They may continue taking medications to support the uterine lining and promote embryo implantation. Pregnancy testing is typically performed 10 to 14 days after embryo transfer to determine if the treatment was successful.
How does IVF work?
IVF involves stimulating the ovaries to produce eggs, retrieving the eggs, fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory, and transferring resulting embryos into the uterus.
What are the success rates of IVF?
Success rates can vary but generally range from 20% to 40% per cycle, depending on factors like age and reproductive health.
Are there any risks associated with IVF?
Yes, risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, multiple pregnancies, ectopic pregnancy, and ovarian torsion.
How do I prepare for IVF treatment?
Preparation involves a thorough evaluation, including medical history review, physical examination, and fertility testing. Counseling may also be provided.
What happens after embryo transfer?
After embryo transfer, patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities. They may continue taking medications to support the uterine lining.
When will I know if IVF was successful?
Pregnancy testing is typically performed 10 to 14 days after embryo transfer to determine if the treatment was successful.
Can I undergo multiple IVF cycles if needed?
Yes, patients may undergo multiple IVF cycles if needed, depending on their individual circumstances and treatment goals.
