EEG (Electroencephalogram)

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive diagnostic test that measures and records the electrical activity of the brain. This test is commonly performed to evaluate brain function, detect abnormalities in brain waves, and diagnose various neurological conditions. Procedure:

  • Preparation: Before the EEG procedure, the patient may be instructed to wash their hair to remove any oils or hair products that could interfere with the electrodes’ adhesion. Certain medications may need to be adjusted or temporarily discontinued before the test, as they can affect brain wave patterns.
  • Placement of electrodes: During the EEG, small metal discs called electrodes are attached to the patient’s scalp using a special adhesive paste or gel. These electrodes detect and record the electrical signals produced by the brain.
  • Recording brain activity: The patient is asked to relax and remain still during the EEG recording, which typically lasts 20 to 60 minutes. The electrodes pick up electrical signals from different areas of the brain, which are amplified and displayed as wave patterns on a computer screen or paper printout.
  • Stimulus testing: In some cases, specific stimuli such as flashing lights or auditory cues may be used to elicit certain brain responses during the EEG recording.
  • Interpretation: After the EEG recording is complete, a neurologist or EEG technician analyzes the brain wave patterns to identify any abnormalities or irregularities. The results are interpreted in conjunction with the patient’s medical history and symptoms to make an accurate diagnosis.

Indications:

EEG testing may be recommended for various neurological conditions, including:

  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders
  • Brain tumors
  • Head injuries
  • Sleep disorders
  • Encephalopathy or altered mental status
  • Evaluation of brain function during surgery or anesthesia

Results:

The results of the EEG provide valuable information about brain function and can help diagnose neurological conditions, determine seizure types, assess treatment effectiveness, and guide treatment decisions. Abnormalities in brain wave patterns may indicate underlying neurological disorders, while normal EEG findings may help rule out certain conditions.

Complications:

Some patients may experience mild discomfort or skin irritation from the electrode application, but these effects are temporary and resolve quickly after the test. Rarely, individuals with a history of epilepsy may experience a seizure triggered by the flashing lights used during the EEG.
